What is EXIF Data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is hidden metadata embedded inside every digital photo by your camera, smartphone, or photo editing app. It stores technical details about how the photo was taken — but also potentially sensitive information including your exact GPS location, the date and time, and which device you used.

What Personal Data is Hidden in Your Photos?

GPS Coordinates: If taken on a smartphone, the exact latitude/longitude where the photo was captured — often accurate to within 3 metres. This can reveal your home address, workplace, or regular locations. Date & Time: The exact moment the photo was taken. Device Info: Your phone model and sometimes a unique device identifier. Software: Which app or editing software was used to process the image.

Is This Tool Safe to Use?

Yes — completely. This tool uses the HTML5 FileReader API to read your image entirely inside your browser. Your image is never uploaded to any server. The EXIF data is parsed locally using the open-source exifr library.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does EXIF data include my location?
Yes, if your photo was taken on a smartphone with location services enabled. The GPS coordinates embedded in the EXIF data are often accurate to within a few metres. Always check your EXIF data before sharing photos online.
Do social media platforms strip EXIF data?
Most major platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, WhatsApp) strip EXIF data automatically when you upload. However, sending photos via email, Telegram (as a file), or cloud sharing (Google Drive, Dropbox) preserves the original EXIF including GPS.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All EXIF reading and stripping is done locally in your browser. Your image never leaves your device. This is especially important for sensitive photos containing private location data.
Can stripped EXIF data be recovered?
No. When metadata is removed using this tool (via the HTML5 Canvas API), the original EXIF tags are not present in the output file at all — they cannot be recovered by any software. The clean image is a fresh Canvas export.
