💡 Transfer photos from iPhone via USB if AirDrop sends as HEIC
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's image format, introduced with iOS 11 in 2017. It uses the HEVC codec to store photos at 50% smaller file size than JPEG at the same quality. This means more photos fit on your iPhone without sacrificing quality. However, HEIC is not universally supported — Windows, Android, WhatsApp, and most websites expect JPEG format.
Windows does not natively support HEIC (without a paid Microsoft extension). Android phones and most online platforms also don't accept HEIC. When you AirDrop or cable-transfer HEIC photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC, they often can't be opened directly. Converting to JPG makes your iPhone photos instantly compatible with every device and platform.
To switch your iPhone to save photos as JPEG by default: go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select "Most Compatible" instead of "High Efficiency". This will save future photos as JPEG. For existing HEIC photos, use this converter.
